That’s the thing: it is kind of gross and manipulative. You’re right. You can’t deny that Barney lied to Robin for weeks and kind of emotionally manipulated her, etc. But the thing is, Robin knows that. She knows Barney. And when she accepted his proposal, she accepted it full well realizing that Barney had been playing her to a degree this whole time. She knew what he’d done to her. But the thing is, she loves him. Despite her better reasoning, she loves him. She has always loved his playboy nature, his crazy plays, his subtle manipulations. She’s been into that from the start. And I don’t think she enjoyed it happening to her, but she realized in that moment - this is the man she loves. She realized that this action - this crazy scheme he’s worked up - is just another facet of the man that she loves and accepts. So when she said yes, she said it with full knowledge of who the man in front of her is and what he’s done to her but how much he loves her and the life he wants with her. And she knows that she wants to be with him. Accepting this proposal, when it was both romantic and kind of a dick move - I think, made her remember that that is Barney Stinson - romantic idiot asshole. Who loves her. And who she loves. She knew all of this in that moment, and accepted anyway. Because even with all of that, he’s still the man she wants to spend her life with.

I disagree that its “gross and manipulative”. With any proposal, the plan is a secret from the one being proposed to and this was just that, with his Barney twist, was it more manipulative than needed? possibly. But this is Barney, this is what he does and the fact that he did any of this, the way he did it means he’s done with plays and being the player. he definitely went out with a bang.

I don’t think there was any other way for Barney to propose to Robin to make her realize that he’s ready for that commitment, that he’s ready to stop chasing women, that he’s ready for Robin, completely and thats why this is the most romantic proposal that i’ve seen on TV ever

I think it’s vital to understand this from Robin’s P.O.V. Honestly, if you were to go back and watch all this episodes and edit out every bit of insight we get from Barney’s side of things and just see things through her eyes, I think we would feel very differently about all of this. From Robin’s P.O.V., every advance Barney’s made on her was physical instead of emotional, and every single time he put his real emotions out there he immediately retracted them or played them off as a joke. From Robin’s perspective, Barney was the one that didn’t wanther.Not the other way around. She didn’t put herself out there because she couldn’t believe that Barney would ever want her. And why would he? Everytime they’ve almost gotten together it’s always been at theworst timing and was usually physical. Barney had a record, and she can’t just forget that. When she read that play, when she went through every step and manipulative move Barney pulled, it was like confirmation in her mind that he could neverreallylove her, neverreally want a future with her. He was all in it just for the play, just for the scheme. When she says, “you set me free” she’s basically confirming to us that she thinks SHE’S been doing the chasing even though we see that’s not true, but SHE doesn’t know that, SHE doesn’t see that. She thinks that she’s been the one making an ass out of herself over and over again to get back the man she loves and now he pulls this stunt and it’s like everything she feared was true. He doesn’t want commitment, he just wants sex, or just wants to date for awhile, or just wants something not serious. It is heartbreaking to watch her go through all of this in her mind, all of her worst nightmares coming to life right before her eyes and it’s just all over and she will never be truly loved.

But then we see Barney, precious Barney, telling her to flip the page over. And she does so, angrily and bitterly, thinking of how stupid this all is, how stupid she’s been to fall in love with him and she complies only out of spite becauseit couldn’t get much worse.And when she reads those words, “Hope she says yes”, not “She WILL say yes” or “Get her to say yes” or “She says yes” but “HOPEshe says yes”, and she sees him down on one knee you can SEE HER just BREAK in half. The way she looks at him like she can’t even believe what’s happening. This is what she wanted all along; Barney, on one knee, proposing toher.Not Quinn. Not Nora. Not Patrice. Not any other girl. Her best friend, the love of her life, her soulmate, her favorite person in the world, on one knee forher.He’s not saying he wants a one night stand, not saying he wants to just complete his ultimate play… He’s saying he wants forever, he wants to do thisforever,that his old life is dead and he wants to be the best man he can be forher.And the vulnerability of the words of “hope she says yes” means that he doesn’t know, he’s putting himself out there one last time. And when she gets that smile on her face, like she can’t believe this is happening but she is so fucking happy her insides are on fire and she just can’t even fucking say anything other than “Yes”… I mean my God, how can you not see the love between these two? This was so much more than just a “play”. This was really the only way that Robin could ever truly understand that Barney is truly, hopelessly, irretrievably in love with her forever.

I just cannot with these two.
